Malaysian Birds

 Spectacled Bulbul

Diagnostic markings :- 17 cm. I consider this species most difficult to ascertain. But first though the measurement here I mentioned it to be measuring 17 Cm, this is a large looking Bulbul. Depended heavily to spot that gold ring around the eyes. But seeing that depended so much on lightings. The series of pictures below will explain. Noticing the ring - clear or faint is easy. However sometimes with a faint looking ring, the yes may appear reddish.  [1] Same looks as the Red-eyed Bulbul but instead of the red eyes, this one has orange to golden eye ring. Upper part very much the same warm uniform brown in color

Distribution :- This bird is native to Sumatra & Borneo but now are in Southern Thailand and Peninsula Malaysia. same comment as in Red-eyed Bulbul.

Habitats and preferences :-  The Spectacled Bulbul is a bird of the forested hills. In places where the forest is continuous and there are open country and forest edge. It is another bird that prefers canopy and patronizes low flowering and fruiting trees.

The first time I had to study the bird for ID was years ago. I had seen these few birds among the Jambu Trees taking on fruits in the Wildlife Research Station in Sungkai. There I practiced my skills in making ID on them. Otherwise, this Bulbul would be sharing habitats and food with the Red-eyed Bulbul. These 2 Bulbuls, the Red-eyed and the Spectacled were seen on the same fruiting trees. So there would be many similar looking Bulbuls to make ID difficult. When the bird is alone, making out the ID is a much easier task and plenty of opportunity to focus the sighting on the eye alone for ID. This is an equally common Bulbul, chances of meeting up with the species is more than good.

Most of the pictures used on this page were taken fairly recent from Perdik and Congkak.
